What is causing brown, dead patches on my leylandii hedge?

Our Advice:

This is cypress aphids, which cause brown patches of dead foliage but, before this, you may see yellow mottling on shoot tips to indicate that insects are actively feeding. Spray both areas with Bayer Greenfly Killer'>Greenfly Killer from Bayer or P Y Garden Insect Killer Spray from Vitax.
