Canker - Bleeding

Image of Canker - Bleeding

Description

Is a bacterial infection specific to horse chestnuts and both the re and white flowered types are affected. If the canker girdles the tree, it dies.

Symptoms

Cracks in the bark on stems and trunks of affected trees, and a sticky, rusty looking liquid oozing from them. Dead sections of bark will fall away exposing the wood and reveal a brown or purple discoloured area of inner bark. Gradually the infection causes crown thinning, die-back and even death of part or all of the tree. Cankers can be seen at any time of year.
