Trim lightly after flowering removing the old flower spike and couple of leaves to prevent it becoming tall and straggly. Never cut back into old, bare stems as they usually die back rather than produce new shoots. They are not long-lived plants but you can root semi-ripe cuttings in summer, which will flower next year.
