What is this black mould on the Pieris leaves?

Our Advice:

This sooty mould is usually caused by scale insects feeding on the underside of the leaves. Treat the plant with Bug Clear Ultra from Scott's or Provanto Ultimate Bug Killer from Bayer/SMB. Both act by killing the insects as they feed. Several applications may be required, and the sooty mould should gradually disappear.
