Why is there a swollen pod on my Stephanotis?

Our Advice:

This is a seed capsule, which will either shrivel and drop off the plant, or it could eventually split open to reveal lots of seeds. These will be held in a cotton wool-like substance which needs to be separated from the seeds. You can germinate the seeds in a propagator, but you will have a 3-4 year wait before the seedlings begin to flower.

Stephanotis: Overview

Stephanotis, also known as Madagascar jasmine, is a genus of flowering plants native to Madagascar and other tropical regions of the world. They are known for their fragrant, star-shaped white flowers and are often used in weddings and other special occasions.

Stephanotis: Characteristics

Stephanotis plants are evergreen vines that can climb up to 20 feet in height. They have glossy, dark green leaves and produce clusters of small, waxy white flowers that are highly fragrant. The flowers are typically around 2 inches in diameter and have a distinctive star shape with five pointed petals.

Stephanotis: Cultivation

Stephanotis plants prefer warm, humid conditions and do best in bright, indirect sunlight. They require well-draining soil and regular watering, but should be allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. The plants can be grown in containers or trained to climb up trellises or other structures. Pruning should be done in the spring to control growth and promote flowering.

Stephanotis: Uses

Stephanotis plants are commonly used in weddings and other special occasions as a symbol of marital happiness and lasting love. The fragrant flowers are often included in bouquets and floral arrangements, and the vines can be used to create beautiful and intricate decorations. Stephanotis plants are also used in traditional medicine for their antispasmodic and sedative properties.

Stephanotis plants are a beautiful and fragrant addition to any garden or home. With their delicate white flowers and easy-to-care-for nature, they are a popular choice for weddings and other special occasions. Whether grown for ornamental purposes or for their medicinal properties, Stephanotis plants are an important member of the plant kingdom.
