What is the sticky residue on the leaves of my lemon tree?

Our Advice:

This is honeydew which has been excreted by either mealy bug or scale insects as they feed on the plant. If it is not dealt with, it will weaken the plant. Spray with Bug Clear Ultra Gun from Scott's or Plant Rescue for Flowering Plants from Westland.
