How can I stop my onions running to seed next year?

Our Advice:

This is called bolting and one of the best ways to reduce the chance of it is to buy heat treated onion sets, rather than seed. The heat treatment tends to kill off the embryo flower bud inside the bulb, leaving it unable to flower, but it still has the potential to produce a large, tasty bulb.
