The flowering time for Ceanothus dictates the best time to prune them, regardless of whether it is evergreen or deciduous. Those which flower between spring and mid-summer are best pruned as soon as the flowers have finished. Those flowering in late summer and early autumn should be pruned the following spring, after the frosts.
