What causes brown corky lumps on potatoes?

Our Advice:

This is common scab, which also affects beetroot, radishes, swedes and turnips. It is worse on dry, limey soils, so keep the plants well watered, don't add too much lime and choose cultivars which show some resistance, such as 'Accent', 'Arran Pilot', 'Juliette', 'Golden Wonder', 'King Edward', 'Pentland Crown' and 'Pentland Javelin'.
