What are the pink bean-like pods on my magnolia?

Our Advice:

These are magnolia fruits which will eventually split open to reveal bright orange seeds. You can collect the seeds and sow into pots of loam-based John Innes No1 compost in a cool sheltered position. Cover the compost surface with grit to stop slugs grazing on the new seedlings. The seeds can take up to two years to germinate and grow.
