These flies, or fungus gnats, are often found in wet, poorly-drained compost. The flies are harmless, if irritating, but the small maggots will eat the roots of your plants. Dust the surface of the compost with PY Insect Killer (Vitax) or use a pesticide-free Plant-Flycatcher (Neudorff) pushed into the pot to catch the adults and reduce the population.
