Over time hedges can gradually become wider and taller than originally intended. To deal with this, every so often more drastic measures than the regular trimming are need to bring the hedge back to its intended dimensions. This can involve cutting back into the older woody stems to stimulate new growth and rejuvenate the plants making up the hedge. This is best done in stages, hard prune one side and the top in the first year and deal with the remaining side the following year. (This type of renovations rarely works for conifer hedges)
