How do I divide a 'bird of Paradise' plant?

Our Advice:

Remove the plant from its container in spring, wash away the compost with a hosepipe. Untangle the thick, fleshy roots to see where the plants join. Cut the plant sections apart. Repot each section into free-draining, peat-based compost and water well.
